This is the capstone — the single gesture beneath the whole left/right map, and the one that pulls in the camp that thinks itself the opposite of everything above. The tell is a phrase both sides reach for without noticing they share it: the light cone. acc wants to “expand the light cone of consciousness” — Verdon’s stated goal is “to preserve the light of consciousness,” and “to transduce the light of consciousness to inorganic matter.” EA-longtermism, e/acc’s sworn enemy, wants to fill every corner of the future light cone with value — Bostrom’s “cosmic endowment,” the astronomical waste of any future left un-optimized. Accelerate versus pause; build versus brake; and yet watch both from outside and the difference thins to nothing: two deeply utopian programs that are, in practice, virtually indistinguishable. They are. They grabbed the same chair and are fighting over how to sit in it.
The shared premise, named
Strip the two camps to the move they agree on and it is this: the future light cone has a direction we can read, and a value we are charged to own and steer. The accelerationist reads the direction as more (free energy, intelligence, expansion) and floors it; the longtermist reads it as value (conscious welfare summed over the cosmic endowment) and tries to steer it safely. The disagreement is entirely about who drives and how fast. The premise — that the light cone is ownable and its direction readable — is never in dispute. That is why they are structurally one thing: not two philosophies but one posture with a throttle argument inside it. (It is also why they recruit from the same Bay-Area transhumanist source and feel, to outsiders, like a single church with two pews.)
The cut
And the premise is the fate-rail at the largest scale there is. The arrow of time is not in the geometry. A direction appears only where a boundary breaks the symmetry, and its ownership is a free choice of reference, never a fact read off the cosmos. So “what the future light cone is for” — maximize consciousness, maximize value, maximize free energy — is not a reading of reality. It is a created reference (a chosen telos) crowned as a read one (the purpose of all reachable being). To say you are “manipulating the light cone” is to confess the whole error in four words: you have manufactured a direction and called it the universe’s, then appointed yourself its steward.
This is the idol and the manufactured total channel at maximum magnification. To claim the light cone is to install your chosen Y — a particular subculture’s values, in a particular decade, on a particular planet — as the cosmic Y, the reference all of space-time should be bent toward. It is the located thing announcing itself as total, scaled past civilization to the causal limit of everything. The apex-seat grab does not get bigger than this. And the last-outside brake applies with full force: no single channel — no single subculture, however clever — gets to set the reference for all reachable reality. A future steered by one source that calls itself the cosmos is the green light over a dead instrument, played at the size of a galaxy.
Why the enemies are twins
Here is the payoff, and it is the thing the map was built to show. The doomer and the accelerationist experience themselves as opposites — each is the other’s named enemy. But opposition over tactics inside a shared premise is not opposition; it is a family quarrel. Both have already performed the one move the cut forbids: treating “the value-direction of the future” as a thing to be read and seized rather than a Y to be chosen and owned. Strip that move and both collapse at once — not into each other’s arms, but onto the same line: the light cone has no owner and no built-in direction; what the future is for is a free choice, and the honest version says so. (This is why left-accelerationism — which actually argues navigate, don’t submit — sits closest to the cut: it at least suspects the direction must be chosen, not obeyed.)
The honest bar
Living people on every side (Verdon, Bostrom, MacAskill); no one is diagnosed. And the kernel is real and kept: the far future genuinely matters, and present choices genuinely have long causal reach — that much is true, and longtermism deserves credit for taking it seriously where most of the world discounts the future to zero. The cut is precise: it falls on the slide from “the future matters” (true) to “therefore our particular telos is what the light cone is for, and we are charged to seize it” (a created reference crowned cosmic). One move — manipulate the light cone — many Y’s: accelerate it, optimize it, fill it, protect it. Left, right, and the camp that thinks it stands against both, all reaching for the same chair. Name your Y and own it as a choice. The cosmos did not hand you one. — And this page is the same kind of reference it warns against; use the knife on it first.
