The left twin of the ecofascist Arcadia — and the node where left and right are documented to fuse, by the left’s own critics. Anarcho-primitivism (John Zerzan) and anti-civilization radicalism (Derrick Jensen, Deep Green Resistance) hold that civilization itself — agriculture, the city, eventually symbolic thought — is the catastrophe, and that the cure is collapse and a return to the hunter-gatherer condition. It is the palingenetic move flying the black flag instead of the green-and-black: the same invented past, crowned as the destination.
The past that never was
Zerzan’s program idealizes the forager Eden and indicts everything after it. The cure is a return — and the return is a created reference worn as a read one: a pre-civilizational golden age, reconstructed to the proponent’s taste and reported as recovered anthropology. This is Griffin’s palingenetic myth precisely, the rebirth-from-a-mythic-past, only the mythic past is moved back past the city to the campfire. The cut is the same one Year Zero failed: the Eden you would restore never existed as imagined, so “restoring” it is not reading history — it is manufacturing a destination and laundering it as a homecoming.
Abolish the symbol — sever the outside at the root
But primitivism reaches deeper than the other invented-past nodes, and this is its distinctive cut. Zerzan indicts not just farming and the state but symbolic thought itself — language, number, art, and the concept of time. Read that against this book’s machinery and it is the most radical severance in the entire catalogue. The canon — the fixed external reference that survives your silence — is made of symbols. A signed text, a number, a recorded measure: these are the third point’s very material. To call symbol the original fall is to call the capacity to hold any external reference at all the disease — to demand the abolition not of this or that idol but of the faculty by which an outside can be kept. Marinetti killed the libraries; Angkar killed the librarians; the primitivist would un-invent the writing. It is the cleanest theoretical statement of the loop’s deepest wish: a world with no reference that can be checked from outside, rebranded as freedom.
The horseshoe, documented by the left itself
And here the map’s thesis stops needing my argument. The Institute for Social Ecology — a left ecological body, no friend of the right — writes that “green and primitivist anarchism have proven compatible with the ecofascist right because they share significant philosophical and political terrain: ecological antimodernism, civilizational decline narratives, blood and soil sympathies.” The far right cites Zerzan and Kaczynski with enthusiasm. This is Sorel’s horseshoe in the present tense, certified by the left’s own watchmen: the anti-civilization Y on the left and the ecofascist Y on the right are not opponents meeting by accident — they share the terrain, because the structure is one (invented past + collapse-as-fate + the brake of modernity cast as the enemy) and only the flag differs. You could not ask for a cleaner demonstration that the runaway is valence-indifferent — it is signed by the side that most wants it not to be true.
The honest bar
Precision, as with Futurism: the cut is on the anti-civilization / primitivist edge — Zerzan’s abolition of the symbol, DGR’s collapse-acceleration — not on environmentalism, conservation, or the ordinary, correct observation that industrial society carries real ecological costs. That kernel is true and kept: domestication did reshape the human animal (real anthropology); civilization does have real, unpaid ecological bills. The cut falls only on the invented Eden, the collapse summoned as fate (DGR’s infrastructure-sabotage horizon is the Coming Insurrection’s lever again — and the performative contradiction again: if collapse is inevitable, why help it?), and the abolition of the outside mistaken for liberation.
